Raku Workshop June 11th

Intermediate and Members only

From 225 US dollars
First House Pottery Studio

Service Description

No prior knowledge of raku is required. Just the ability to create forms! $225 covers raku clay, firing, terra sigillata slip ingredients, and raku firing process (in Warren). I am in charge of the clay and bisque firing before the raku date. We will travel to Luke Iannuzzi’s studio located in Warren on June 11th. It will be an all day event from 10am-5pm. Filled with many firings and a variety of traditional raku techniques. Raku is a “razzle-dazzle” firing process. I encourage you to join the event. I was fortunate to have many raku opportunities throughout college. But it has been over 15 years. So I'm currently digging deep and refreshing my knowledge (I suggest you do the same!). Details; In this low fire raku offering we will be exploring traditional raku glazes; One & Two Step Slip Resist on Naked Raku, Horse Hair and Obvara firings. You will receive 20lbs of raku clay. That will need to be bisque fired before June 11th raku. The last scheduled raku bisque kiln before the workshop will be Thursday June 4th. There will be other scheduled raku bisque kilns prior to the last date (don't leave it all to the last minute!). Traditional raku methods involve applying Terra Sigillata to the pottery surface before bisque firing. It is a white slip applied before bisque and will essentially be the “acting” glaze we use in this firing. Burnishing and polishing the surface is recommended as well. I love sharing my passion and knowledge, but I cannot dedicate time to repeating information to everyone individually. So I'm willing to provide workshops specifically for surface preparation. You are welcome to join me for a hands-on, instructional workshop mixing Terra Sigillata and applying/burnishing the surface. After sign up we'll arrange a time depending on your needs (additional $25 surface preparation workshop charge). Or you are also welcome to research your own information and conquer the task independently. You'll have everything you need. Low fire naked raku is a non-functional form of creating. Pottery will not be food safe- Think decoratively! With Luke -Students are given thorough instruction and demonstrations of techniques as well as loading, unloading and firing the kilns. Students choose to participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable. Must sign a waiver.
